Gimli

Gimli is the dwarf protagonist of The Lord of the Rings and mentioned only in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Biography[]

Gimli was born in the Blue Mountains to Gloin, who was a member of the company of Thorin Oakenshield. Gimli wanted to go on the quest to reclaim Erebor with his friends, Fíli, Kíli and Ori. However, Thorin Oakenshield thought Gimli was too young, being only sixty-two years old by the Quest of Erebor.

Gimli's portrait appears in The Desolation of Smaug, where Legolas steals it from Gloin, who gruffly asks for it back. However, ,Legolas questions about Gimli, calling him the woman in the portrait, classifying her as his brother and Gimli a "goblin mutant." An offended Gloin says that is his wife and son.

The Fellowship of the Ring[]

After the One Ring re-surfaced in TA 3001, Gimli and his father, Glóin represented the Dwarves during the Council of Elrond. Gimli joined the company of the Ring, expressing that he would give his life to Frodo and his ax.
